Hi I’m MJ! Together with my mom, we're NomNomz. A Charlotte-based snack brand making bold sorghum puffs with zero dyes, zero fillers, and zero added sugar. We didn't start out trying to build a snack brand — we were just trying to solve a problem at our own kitchen table. In June 2026, that story caught the attention of WBTV's QC Life, and host Jana Angel had us on to share it.
Where It Started: A Bag of Takis and Spicy Cheetos but Mom Said No
We tested something we didn't plan to sell
Like a lot of 12 year olds, I love the crunch-and-burn heat of some snacks. My mom, like any other parent, liked the idea of them a lot less after she read the labels.
Instead of just taking the bag away, mom started experimenting in the kitchen — trying to build something with the same payoff, the crunch and the heat, without the dyes and the fillers like maltodextrin and TBHQ. What are those? Twenty-plus test batches later, we had something close...and better, ofc.
The real test wasn't in our kitchen, though. It was at school. I brought a bag in, and it didn't survive — my friends cleared it out before I could eat them. This happened over and over. That was the moment we realized this wasn't just mom fixing a snack problem for me. We might actually have something here.
An Ancient Grain Family Surprise
Sorghum isn't a trend we picked because it's having a moment. It actually isn't having a moment but it's about to (more on this in our next story). It's a grain with real roots in our own family's history. When we went looking for a base that could deliver real crunch without corn, sorghum wasn't a discovery, it was a homecoming. My mom grew up on this, so did her mom, and her mom. And I got a taste of it as a toddler too! But as we started this journey, we learned something, which many also don't know - US is a leading global sorghum grower!
